UC1: Vector Similarity Search in Ancient Greek Texts Using Ancient Greek BERT (AGB)
Researchers studying classical texts often encounter challenges when analyzing specific syntactic structures, such as "X-from-X" formulas (e.g., "God from God," "Light from Light," "True God from True God"). These expressions vary widely, and scholars may not know all the possible words used as "X" in these structures. Traditional exact-match/verbatim search tools are insufficient because they rely on verbatim logic and cannot capture variations in syntax or vocabulary.
UC6 Exploring Apostolicity through AI-Based Semantic Retrieval: A Prototyping Use Case
In the fourth century, the concept of apostolicity gained significant importance in defining the identity and legitimacy of Christian communities. Initially, the early Church considered all Christian congregations "apostolic" in the sense that they preserved and transmitted the teachings of the apostles. However, a more specific notion of apostolicity emerged, wherein the legitimacy of a local church was increasingly tied to its direct foundation by an apostle and its unbroken episcopal succession. This claim became a crucial criterion for asserting orthodoxy and ecclesiastical authority. In this historical and theological context, the study of "foundation myths" of Christian communities holds particular importance. These narratives—often embedded in early Christian literature—serve to reinforce the apostolic origins of a church and its doctrinal authority. Given the vast corpus of ancient Christian texts, manually tracing and analyzing these narratives is a labor-intensive task. This use case explores the potential of AI-based semantic retrieval systems to assist scholars in identifying and mapping references to apostolicity across large textual collections.
