trends, there are few human data. This non-genetic inheritance is all the more remarkable when transmission is down the male-line as reported in a historical Swedish study, where the paternal grandfather's food supply in mid childhood was associated with the mortality rate in his grandsons. Using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children's questionnaire data on smoking and smoking onset from 9886 fathers, we examined the growth of their children from 7\u201317 years. Adjusting for potential confounders, we assessed associations between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, total fat mass and lean mass with the age at which the father had started smoking regularly. Of 5376 fathers who reported having ever smoked, 166 reported regular smoking <11 years of age. Before adjustment, those offspring whose fathers started smoking <11 years had the highest mean BMIs at each age tested. The adjusted mean differences in BMI, waist circumference and total fat mass in those sons whose fathers started smoking <11 years, compared with all other sons, increased with age, being significantly greater from 13 years onwards. There were no significant BMI associations in daughters, but they showed a reduction in total lean mass. Our results highlight the importance of the developmental timing of the paternal exposure as well as gender differences in offspring outcomes. trends, there are few human data. This non-genetic inheritance is all the more remarkable when transmission is down the male-line as reported in a historical Swedish study, where the paternal grandfather's food supply in mid childhood was associated with the mortality rate in his grandsons. Using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children's questionnaire data on smoking and smoking onset from 9886 fathers, we examined the growth of their children from 7\u201317 years. Adjusting for potential confounders, we assessed associations between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, total fat mass and lean mass with the age at which the father had started smoking regularly. Of 5376 fathers who reported having ever smoked, 166 reported regular smoking <11 years of age. Before adjustment, those offspring whose fathers started smoking <11 years had the highest mean BMIs at each age tested. The adjusted mean differences in BMI, waist circumference and total fat mass in those sons whose fathers started smoking <11 years, compared with all other sons, increased with age, being significantly greater from 13 years onwards. There were no significant BMI associations in daughters, but they showed a reduction in total lean mass. Our results highlight the importance of the developmental timing of the paternal exposure as well as gender differences in offspring outcomes. of planktonic foraminiferal species occurred during Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events (OAEs), the direct effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on planktonic foraminifera remain obscure. Culture experiments can quantify the relationship between planktonic foraminiferal ecology and environmental parameters, but experiments controlling DO have yet to be conducted because it is difficult to maintain a stable oxygen concentration. In this study, we cultured two planktonic foraminifer species ( Orbulina universa and Globigerina bulloides ) at six different DO levels between 10% and 100% saturation. Both species showed a high tolerance to low DO, suggesting that \u201cdysoxic\u201d conditions (>\u00a00.7\u00a0mg\u00a0O 2 \u00a0l \u2212\u00a01 ) were not a direct cause of planktonic foraminiferal extinction at OAEs. The high tolerance of these species to extremely low DO might be attributable to their evolutionary descent from benthic foraminifera. Final shell weight increased with increasing DO, suggesting that fossil foraminiferal shell weight could vary with past DO conditions. Our results suggest that the extinction of many planktonic foraminiferal species during OAEs may have been due to anoxic or euxinic conditions in the euphotic zone. The humbug damselfish, Dascyllus aruanus, is widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, and exclusively inhabits branching corals. We used mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence and seven microsatellite loci on D. aruanus samples (260 individuals) from 13 locations across the Indo-West Pacific to investigate its phylogeographic structure distribution-wide. A major genetic partition was found between the Indian and Pacific Ocean populations, which we interpret as the result of geographic isolation on either side of the Indo-Pacific barrier during glacial periods. The peripheral populations of the Red Sea and the Society Islands exhibited lower genetic diversity than, and substantial genetic differences with the other populations, suggesting relative isolation. Thus, vicariance on either side of the Indo-Pacific barrier and peripheral differentiation are thought to be the main drivers that have shaped the phylogeographic patterns presently observed in D.
